As far as I am concerned motor home and camper van are interchangeable terms. Okay, I appreciate there are panel van conversions and coach builds, but surely both can be referred to as a motor home or a camper van. I mean, each of them is a home on wheels, just like each of them are vans used for camping. This seems pretty obvious to me, however it appears that I am somewhat mistaken in my thinking.
According to a work colleague, who has recently bought a VW T5 a camper van is totally different to a motor home and the terms are not interchangeable. When I referred to my work colleague’s VW T5 as a motor home she freaked and I was severely rapped over the knuckles. Yep, I felt well and truly told off and almost asked how long I should spend on the naughty step.
Apparently, well according to my work colleague “A camper van is a vehicle that was a van in the first instance and then converted to a vehicle suitable for camping in”, and “A motor home is a vehicle that is built specifically for camping and nothing else”. Hmmm……….
So, does this mean that the panel van style Trigano and Adria vehicles are motor homes? I don’t recall ever seeing these vehicles driving around stripped of the units, cooker, plumbing etc. I have to say that I am a little bit confused.
After ordering the Accordo 120 I was telling another work colleague, who doesn’t even like camping, and referred to it as a camper van. He instantly said “Like a VW camper van? Yeah, I now know what you’re getting” Once again, hmmmmm…… This conversation made me realize that people who don’t know (and probably don’t care) about motor homes and camper vans will instantly think of A VW camper if they hear the words “camper van”.
So there is a perceived difference between a camper van and a motor home, and the way I see it is:-
The above is pretty academic (and I really don’t care), and I will always refer to the Accordo as the camper to my better half. When I am talking about the Accordo with others (especially my work colleague with the VW T5) I will refer to it as the motor home, just so there are no misunderstandings. Jeez, what a petty world we live in………..
