I have used many different type of fishing rod to fish the Norfolk Broads from on board a boat, and the rod I consider the best is the telescopic rod.
There was a time when telescopic rods were cheap and nasty, crude and terrible to use. These telescopic rods were made from inferior materials, they weren’t balanced and the ‘action’ was non-existent. Playing a fish to the net on these telescopic rods wasn’t fun.
Fortunately, times have changed and the range of telescopic fishing rods has significantly increased. Modern day telescopic rods have come a long way and are totally different to the old style. Modern day telescopic rods are tough, durable and made from good quality materials and use top quality components. Modern day telescopic rods are well put together, balanced and very nice to use. The action of these rods is superb, and not too dissimilar from standard two and three piece take a part rods, so playing a fish to the net is fun.
The old skool telescopic rods were cheap, however good quality modern day telescopic rods are not. Sure, you can still get a telescopic rod for little money but I guarantee one of these will be exactly like the old skool telescopic rods and will be a total waste of money. If you want a good quality telescopic rod you will enjoy using and catching fish with you need to spend a bit of money.
There are many anglers out there who wouldn’t even consider using a telescopic rod. There are many anglers out there who think that telescopic rods are inferior. There are many anglers out there who, for want of a better phrase, ‘slag off’ telescopic rods without ever using one. I know this from experience, and I have even had an angler look down his nose at me and call me a ‘Noddy angler’ as I was setting up my telescopic fishing outfit.
Anglers falling in to the above categories are missing a trick because modern day telescopic rods are a dream to use and not too different than using a traditional take apart rod. I love the action of my telescopic rods, and I am finding that I am using my telescopic rods for fishing from the bank more and more. I like the versatility of a telescopic rid, I like the fact they are easy to pack away, I like the fact they are easy to transport and I like the fact they are easy to store. Telescopic rods are fast becoming my go to fishing rods, and if you have never tried using a telescopic rod I would recommend going to a local tackle shop and having a play with one. You may well be surprised.
You’ve probably guessed that if I were to recommend or suggest a fishing rod to take to the Norfolk Broads it would be a telescopic rod every time. A telescopic rod is not only great when fishing from a boat on the Broads, but it is equally as good for fishing from the bank.
